iPhone - Now was the time

Written by: Mads Dam - 21.07.2016 - 0 comments

Since the first iPhone came out, back in the day I've been a silent protestor. I didn't want them, didn't like them. Too restrictive and the company was too arrogant, in my opinion. 9 (nine!!) years later I figured the underlying iOS must have matured enough to actually be something I could be satisfied with.

So, what egged me into trying an iPhone now? I've had Nokia/Microsoft-Lumia phones since the HTC Mozart. In the pre-smartphone-era it was Nokia I used. I loved it. My Lumia 800 was a 4" phone but the problem is that every top model phone released since then just grew bigger and bigger in screen size. Something that I loathe. My sight hasn't abandoned me yet, so I can still manage a 4" screen. The Lumia 920, was very nice, and the wireless charging was superb! It carried on to 930 which I had for 2 years. And then, then everything in the Lumia line became either quiet, or even much bigger; [read Lumia 950 (XL)]. Windows Phone 7 and 8.0, was great. I loved it. But starting with Windows 10 Mobile, it has really deteriorated into something I refuse to live with.

Enter the iPhone SE which was introduced March 2016 by Apple. The declining sales of iPhone 6(s) (plus) apparently translated into Apple believing that not everyone wanted a big screen phone. So they packed most of iPhone 6s hardware into a 5s body. This is what intrigued me a lot, so come July 20th, I bought one.

Apps

I'm really not an apps-guy but I do enjoy my most basic ones that offer good functionality over a webbased version. Here are my apps:

  • Snapchat
  • Skype
  • Tumblr
  • HERE Maps
  • Wordfeud
  • Sparekassen Sjælland Mobilbank (mobile banking)
  • Pokémon GO
  • Storebox
  • MobilePay
  • OneNote
  • Sonos
  • Battle.net Authenticator
  • e-Boks
  • minetilbud (physical grocery-advertising gone digital)
  • Nordea Mobilbank (mobile banking)
  • OneDrive
  • Kindle (Amazon)

I really only use a few of the builtin apps - cause I don't want to be engulfed in Apples eco-system. I refuse to be enslaved by one company alone that doesn't make their apps available in more eco-systems. With Mail, I use an Exchange-account - I only use iCloud to backup my app-list and their data. Photos are uploaded to OneDrive and notes are being taken by OneNote.

Setting up and configuring all the apps are really timeconsuming. They all configure differently. There's no coherent way of doing it. That is really more intuitive on Windows Phone.

The builtin Calendar-app is confusing. It's quite difficult to get an easy overview of when I'm available. The best option for me is the agenda-view

Notes (if I wanna write more to this):

- Much more configurable than earlier years (although I haven't been using them myself, bosses and employees have ;)

- Antenna is still something that seems crappy

- Missing dedicated camera-button
Update 2016-08-08 - Ooooh - Volume-up acts as dedicated button! :)

- Missing wireless charging
